Hiring a Captain at Lake of the Ozarks

A good captain handles navigation, docking, and safety so you can focus on your group. But not everyone advertising "captain services" has the credentials to do it legally.

Look for a USCG license

Lake of the Ozarks is federally regulated water. Professional captains need a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential—either an OUPV ("6-pack") for up to 6 passengers, or a Master license for larger groups.

Ask about insurance

Legitimate captains carry commercial marine liability insurance—not a recreational policy. If they can't confirm commercial coverage in writing, that's a red flag.

More than 6 passengers? Check for a COI

Vessels carrying more than 6 paying passengers must have a USCG Certificate of Inspection displayed on board. No COI means illegal operation.
