Missouri Boating Laws: What Actually Matters

You don't need to memorize the statutes. But there are a few rules that trip people up—and a few that carry real consequences.

Born after 1984? You need a boater safety card

Missouri requires anyone born after January 1, 1984 to complete an approved safety course before operating a motorboat. It takes a few hours online—don't skip it.

BWI is enforced—especially on holidays

The legal limit is 0.08% BAC, same as driving. Passengers can drink, but the operator cannot. Patrol boats are active on busy weekends.

There's no daytime speed limit—but there are rules

The main channel has no posted speed limit during the day. But you must slow to no-wake within 100 feet of docks, and 30 mph after sunset. "Careful and prudent" is the legal standard everywhere.

Don't want to worry about compliance?

When you hire a captain, they handle the legal side—licensing, navigation rules, and keeping the operator sober. You just show up.
